We Carry the Tablets

We enter this space
as an exit
from Egypt.

With mercy, compassion, love—
and also fear and fragility—
there is a kind of sadness in me.

A sadness of brokenheartedness,
of the brokenness
we all carry.

Yet there is also
a sacredness
I sometimes know—

the sacredness of the God
who leads us
from the mountaintop,
the mountaintop we call Sinai.

And yet Sinai
is not a place.

It is the experience
we yearn for
in every moment,
in everything we do,
in every experience we have.

We carry the tablets
within us.

We carry
the Golden Calf
within us.
